Attending a Wedding? These 16 Sewing Patterns Are Guaranteed to Impress

above JASMIN OF SEWING PATTERNS BY MASIN

Here at Peppermint, we’re not afraid to come out with our bold pro-love stance. We’d go so far as to say we love love. The only thing better than love, perhaps, is when you get invited to a big party that’s all about love, filled with people you love! A wedding, we believe they’re sometimes called.

If you’re anything like us, once that glitzy invite arrives in the post, the cogs start turning: what kind of marvellous creation will you create for the big day? Here, we’ve put together a swathe of sewing patterns that are suitable for ceremonies of all shapes, sizes and dress codes – including a couple of wedding-worthy Peppermint patterns. Sew on and celebrate, mes amours

CLASSY AND COMFY

Some weddings are endurance events. We’re talking multiple locations, multiple activities. If you want something that can take you from sitting to standing, eating to dancing and mingling to midnight revelries, all while looking sophisticated and being as comfy as all get-out, take a look at Silversaga’s romantic maxi Ella Dress (above left) or Style Arc’s effortlessly elegant Elsbeth Dress.

FUN AND FLIRTY

It’s not clear if real-life weddings are actually the locus of sexual and romantic connections that popular media portrays them to be. But! If you’re attending a cocktail-code shindig and you want people to know that even though this event is not about you, you’re actually an incredibly fun, vivacious and interesting person, try something a bit more casual, like the one-shouldered Therese Dress from Swim Style Patterns (with optional cut-out) or get colour-blocking with Our Lady of Leisure’s Gin and Tonic Dress.

Of course, if it’s wedding-wear you’re after, your good friend Peppermint has you covered with our trusty collection of pay-what-you-can patterns. For dance floor enthusiasts, we recommend the super-twirly Peppermint Somerset Swing Dress (above right), designed in collaboration with Jasmin of Sewing Patterns by Masin (fun fact: Jasmin wore the Somerset to her own wedding reception). Or, for something oh-so sweet, look to the Peppermint Rosalie Skirt, which we created in collaboration with Forget-Me-Not Patterns. Just add a matching top and get set to collect allll the compliments.

JUMP FOR JOY

A jumpsuit is a wedding classic – a concession point between ceremony and practicality. Your song comes on? You can break it down on the dance floor without fear of flashing anyone. Do they need help stacking chairs? You can lift without splitting seams. And you still look cute as hell, especially if you pick a sweet pattern like the cheeky twist-tie Mirri Jumpsuit from Papercut Patterns (above left) or The Assembly Line’s Wide Leg Jumpsuit (rock some statement jewellery with that sexy v-neck).

SUIT UP

It cannot be overstated how confident and powerful one feels in a well-fitting suit – and when you’ve sewn it yourself, that’s the me-made guarantee! Pair a tailored vest with matching trousers (like Bella Loves Patterns’ Bennie Vest and Paradise Patterns’ Protea Pants, both shown above) or go the whole hog and pop on a suit jacket, such as Friday Pattern Co.’s ’80s-inspired Heather Blazer (below right). Or eschew expectations and wear a suit jacket as a dress (see: Homer and Howells’ Blair Jacket pattern, below left).

BLACK-TIE BABY

Does anyone do proper black-tie weddings anymore? Wearing a full-on gown to someone else’s special day feels like such a risky move. But these patterns are clever options, deftly tying the knot (get it?) between floor-length formality and wear-again practicality.

Another great make from Lisa from @SunnySewsEveryday:

My #PeppermintWaratahWrapDress is finished and I’m so proud of it. It has been designed not to flap open and flash your pants in the wind, so I feel confident it will be a great wheelchair or standing dress in English weather.

✨ INSTANT CLASSIC ✨

The Peppermint Myrtle Shift Dress is a beginner-friendly make with a few special details based on the ever-stylish shift shape – the perfect dress you need in your wardrobe right now!

Myrtle cuts above the knee with options to customise the length. Don’t think she’s reserved for hot weather either: try a heavier-weight fabric to turn your Myrtle into a pinafore-style garment for layering.

For our fabrics we chose two from our lovely sewing partner @Karmme_Apparel – the bold Rottnest Stripes in a lightweight, soft-drape cotton, and the quality linen in the handpainted Mexico Collection.

Get making the Myrtle – the only question is, can you stop at just one?
