All Wrapped Up: Our Fave Hacks of This Beloved Peppermint Pattern

Way back when in the olden days of Issue 43, we released the Peppermint Wrap Top. This simple yet infinitely stylish piece was designed in collaboration with In The Folds and features fancy french-seam-finished sleeves to make you feel sleek and on fleek inside and out. (Do the kids still say on fleek? Well, they did way back when, so hush).

We loved this little pattern and so did you. It’s still one of our most popular downloads and we have the posts to prove it. We’re always inspired seeing your makes and nothing makes us happier than seeing your creations in the #PeppermintPatterns tag. So, we thought we’d do a little roundup (or should that be wrap up?) of a few of the incredible wrap tops out there created by the Peppermint sewing community!

Even when we thought this pattern was practically perfect, we were blown away by clever hacks and variations out there – from puffy sleeves to no sleeves, from two-tone to monochrome.

Perhaps you’d forgotten the humble wrap top, or perhaps you’re wearing yours right now. Perhaps it’s a wardrobe staple for its comfort and versatility. Perhaps you were thinking of making another but were wondering how you could spice it up.

Whatever your situation, here’s a few tips, tricks and treats from our stitchy pals to spark your sewjo!

HACK #1 || SHORTEN THEM SLEEVES

A simple hack is to shorten the original three-quarter length sleeves to a more summery, casual length.

HACK #2 || POOF THEM SLEEVES

Or you could go in the exact other direction and balloon out the sleeves, adding an elasticated wrist band for extra puff and drama.

HACK #3 || HALF AND HALF IT

The double-sided construction of this piece makes it an easy candidate to combine two different fabrics, be they contrasting colour blocks or clashing patterns to evident electrifying effect.

HACK #4 || MATCHY MATCHY IT

One advantage of fabric hoarding is the ease of which you can make your own classy co-ord configurations to mix and match. Peep the Wrap Top starring in these magnificently monochrome makes.

HACK #5 || RUFFLE IT UP

Add a little razzle dazzle by adorning your hems with a ruffle. Simply measure out a long thin rectangle, between one-and-a-half and two times the length of your chosen hem, gather to fit and sew it on!

NEED EVEN MORE INSPO?

Julia Cost hacked the wrap top into this beautiful dress, hand-embroidered with Hawaiian flora and fauna. And Sarah Bernier didn’t just alter the pattern to include a shortened bodice and sweet flutter sleeves, she took the time to create this beautiful (and educational) graphic to explain her changes!

This is just a sample of the ocean of creativity and excellence demonstrated by the Peppermint sewing community. To join in yourself, download the free pattern  and follow the #PeppermintWrapTop hashtag to see more incredible variations and catch yourself a healthy dose of #sewspo.

My #PeppermintWaratahWrapDress is finished and I’m so proud of it. It has been designed not to flap open and flash your pants in the wind, so I feel confident it will be a great wheelchair or standing dress in English weather.

✨ INSTANT CLASSIC ✨

The Peppermint Myrtle Shift Dress is a beginner-friendly make with a few special details based on the ever-stylish shift shape – the perfect dress you need in your wardrobe right now!

Myrtle cuts above the knee with options to customise the length. Don’t think she’s reserved for hot weather either: try a heavier-weight fabric to turn your Myrtle into a pinafore-style garment for layering.

For our fabrics we chose two from our lovely sewing partner @Karmme_Apparel – the bold Rottnest Stripes in a lightweight, soft-drape cotton, and the quality linen in the handpainted Mexico Collection.

Get making the Myrtle – the only question is, can you stop at just one?
