DONNY Q

Fabric Choice – Linen Cotton Canvas in Amorphous Earth Abstract Landscape

“Hello, I made the Peppermint West End Jacket. This project was done in collaboration with Peppermint Magazine and Spoonflower. I was provided fabric in exchange for making and sharing the pattern shown here.

“The West End Jacket is a free pattern available from Peppermint. The sizing goes up to a 50.75-inch (129 cm) waist. It was made as a collaboration with Camimade Patterns. For this jacket, I used the design ‘Amorphous Earth Abstract Landscape’ by Small Hours Shop printed on a linen and cotton canvas. I chose this design because I knew I’d have fun mixing and matching different areas of the print for the jacket.

“I modified the pattern by rounding out the bottom of the pockets, adding pocket flaps, adjusting the button placements, and I extended the sleeve length by two inches. I think the sleeve adjustment was the wrong call because now the jacket looks too small and not intentionally cropped. This jacket will go to a shorter/smaller friend because I want it to be worn!”

Fabric choice – Lightweight Cotton Twill in Buffalo Plaid

“I’m sharing a really happy collaboration today with Peppermint Magazine and Spoonflower. This is the Peppermint West End Jacket by Camimade Patterns. A gender-neutral chore coat that is currently available for free/pay-what-you-want as a digital download, but you can also get a free physical copy printed inside Issue 55.

“For my first-ever Spoonflower make, I used Buffalo Plaid by Shatzi Brown in Spoonflower’s lightweight cotton twill. I measured into a size E (pattern goes up to a B57, W50.75, H59.75) and made it with zero mods except adding three inches of length to the sleeves. My current measurements are B39, W32, and H41 and I am 5’9”. It also fits my husband beautifully, and if I am being honest, it may look even cooler on him. He says it’s HIS coat now.

“I think this would be a great adventurous beginner pattern, with previous collar and button placket knowledge helpful. It came together really beautifully and was very fun to sew. I am already dreaming of one in corduroy.”

MAKING AND CANDOR

Fabric choice – Dogwood Denim in Black Linen

“Last month, Peppermint reached out to me asking if I would make their new, gender-expansive pattern by Camimade Patterns, the West End Jacket, and finally I finished it. I had the chance to select a fabric from Spoonflower and I could not resist the appeal of this black linen texture. I also wanted the chore coat to be winter ready, so I chose to have it printed on dogwood denim – as far as I know, their thickest offering for dressmaking, lol. I know, I’m incorrigible, but how could I not? I swear I did not have to hammer my seams down.

“To minimise the amount of tears and broken needles (only one by the end of it), I faux flat-felled all seams by serging them together and then stitched them down, and I hand-worked the buttonholes. I could clearly not leave this pattern alone: I wanted to imitate the Road Jacket from the Armoury, which is such a classic (not to mention I’m a massive Armoury stan). To do so, I changed the collar to pointy from round, added a sleeve placket (bias bound again to avoid tears) with buttoned cuffs, and a belt at the bottom. I also shortened the pattern significantly (13cm for size C), raised the pockets, and made them expandable. On second thoughts, I wish I had used the leftover fabric to convert the back to an action back and added shaping to it. Maybe I’ll eventually go back to do it as the action back gives you maximal mobility without adding volume to the garment.

“Overall this is quite a cute pattern and it’s completely free. The fit is generous but not amorphous, and some choices made by the pattern maker render it unique enough to stand out. “

KATIE MAKES A DRESS

Fabric Choice – Lightweight Cotton Twill in Happy Sun Face Illustration Fabric

Always a good time when Peppermint send you their latest pattern with some Spoonflower fabric (twill in this sunny print by Nicky Laatz). This is the West End Jacket by Caminade Patterns and has some really nice details like cuffs, a rounded collar and flat felled seams. It would work as a shirt in a lighter weight fabric too or even cropped in something heavier or quilted!”
